What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling is generally a briefer treatment and service with the focus on sourcing strengths and attaining goals set collaboratively with the practitioner and client.

Psychotherapy is the deeper exploration of emotional and mental health issues that have culminated through trauma & abuse, but also extends to those seeking to explore and understand themselves at a deeper level, which advocates a transformation of their being in all relationships.

What is Existential Therapy?

Existential therapy is available to anyone who has a curiosity of their existence in the world and it’s meaning. When we explore through this approach, a very deep awareness surfaces that provides you with a greater understanding of your role, your relationships and their affect and why you think, feel and act a particular way in certain situations. Through this process, you learn to challenge your beliefs and gain a greater insight of who you are in the world. As you journey through this process, powerful changes take place as you become witness to the ‘self’ of you emerging to chose a life which is meaningful for you.

Can anyone have counselling?

The answer is yes. Counselling and psychotherapy is open to a broad range of needs. These days with all of life’s pressures and limited time, counselling offers a form of self-care, where you can unpack your worries, challenges and confusion, in a safe non-judgmental environment. It is a space that is yours to reflect deeply. There doesn’t need to be a specific mental health problem to use a counselling service. You may just require assistance in working through a tough issue, having difficulty juggling all of life’s responsibilities, feeling burnt out, needing to build self-confidence or there may be changes taking place in your life that counselling can assist you in transitioning through these smoothly.

How long are the sessions?

Counselling commences with weekly sessions and extends to fortnightly then monthly as you progress through your goals and life transitions.

How many sessions do I have?

Unlike other psychological services, there is no set limit to how many sessions you have.

What are signs that it may be a good time for me to see a Counsellor?

  • If you are finding that what you have been doing is no longer working for you or bringing you joy or things/life and all it’s challenges do not make sense, you have come to the right place.

  • If you find old patterns emerging and you are not sure why you keep repeating this or attracting certain situations into your life.

  • When you feel overwhelmed with anxiety.

  • Feelings of lack of self-worth and loneliness are increasing.

  • When your confidence is depleted

  • Feelings of being stuck overwhelm you.

  • Confusion and questions pertaining to the meaning of life and purpose are emerging then this is the perfect place to begin a personal journey of transformation into living a life that is meaningful for you.

Sometimes, we can feel isolated in the world or dismiss our fears and anxieties as a passing moment. What counselling and psychotherapy offers is a safe space to just talk and be present in whatever it is that you are experiencing. I work collaboratively with you, besides you, as we unravel your story to understand how you got to this place. Once you understand your story we begin making decisions, setting measurable goals and narrating a new chapter in your journey of life. This is stepping into your freedom.

How will I know this is right for me?

The therapeutic relationship is the most central point in the process of healing. At the heart of this relationship is trust. Within the first session, we will both have a good idea as to whether this relationship is the right fit for your goals and hopes.
